Bill Blakie
Past President
I been involved initially leading this new society, a lot of
work, but to date certainly not boring. Foremost I am a
piper and have over 40 years pipe band experience which
has been useful during the time I spent as drum major,
drill instructor, committee member and manager in our
former brass band where I spent 15 years before the
split. I contribute also with bagpipes, accordion or the
bass drum as required in our pretty full performance
schedule.

Steve
Coatsworth
President
Hi, as you can see I'm the ugly one
with the most wrinkles who has been enjoying banding for
18 years. I restarted my banding career when my daughter
Sarah began playing as an 11 year old. I am concerned
about the precarious situation
banding is in, especially in the Southland
and Otago area. Banding should be growing and it is not.
Banding needs strong, honest leadership and unfortunately
it hasn't got it. SCMS is showing the way forward. Go
SCMS, I'm enthusiastic.

Lyn Kelliher
Baritone
I am a self-taught baritone player
of 8 or so years. Playing in a band is a great leisure
pass time for me. I enjoy the challenge of practising to
try and contribute to a whole band sound. I admire the
ability of a variety of other players, young and old, and
a Musical Director who can bring it all together to
produce something that people want to hear. Marching is a
favourite of mine too. |

Linda Coatsworth - Treasurer
Baritone
Hi, I'm Linda and I have been seriously learning the
Baritone now for about 18 months. Yes, it is a challenge
for me having other commitments, but the buzz I got
after playing in the "Pipin’ Hot!" show enticed me to
want to do much better and it also proves that you are
never too old to learn. |

Alison Brown
Baritone
I’ve
been playing brass instruments for 8 1/2 years now. For most of
that time I have played the EEb Bass. When I went to University
in Dunedin I had to downsize to the baritone.
I love playing in
the band and try to get down as much as possible to do so.

Mort Crooks
Vice President / Saxophone
My training
in music began at primary school with piano lessons from
the Dominican nuns. While at secondary school I studied
the clarinet under Cuthbert Fleming and on leaving school
was accepted into the City Orchestra, (now the sinfonia)
I performed with them on clarinet from 1958 - 61. At the same time John Klee was tutoring
me on the saxophone and for several years following
played in dance bands at public and private functions.
In 1972
I was invited to join the Invercargill
Orphans Club Orchestra to play saxophone and am
still a current member of it as well as
playing in
their jazz band. I joined the
SCMS in August 2006.
